Karen is a chartered landscape architect and horticulturist, former Trustee of Turn End Trust and a visiting lecturer at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Karen was awarded the 10th Annual Garden History Essay Prize for 'Order in the Landscape: Rediscovering Preben Jakobsen'. The 55-minute long talk will be followed by a Q&A session.
Jakobsen described himself as a "modernist landscape architect, plantsman, urban designer and photographer". This talk will attempt to show you what he meant, and provide a taster of the beauty of his work through his effective integration of landscape and architecture.
Jakobsen first trained in horticulture in Denmark, followed by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and later studied landscape architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Copenhagen under the father of Danish landscape modernism, Professor Carl Theodor Sørensen. For over seven years he was Eric Lyon's landscape architect contributing to the distinctive Span housing landscapes. He was an exceptional plantsman who practiced through the lens of abstract art and geometry seeking "a new expression in landscape design" to integrate architecture and landscape.
