In this illustrated short lecture to mark the publication of his book An Economic History of the English Garden, Roderick Floud will discuss how gardening has transformed our landscape, our townscape and our lives. The technologies of dam-building, of central heating and of metal and glass buildings all have their origins in the gardens of the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Gardening creates beauty but also alters the way we live.

Sir Roderick Floud FBA is a leading economic historian.  He has taught at the universities of Cambridge, London and Stanford and was the Provost of Gresham College between 2008 and 2014.  He received a knighthood for services to higher education. Roderick is a Haddenham resident and former Trustee of Turn End Trust and is hosting the evening in support of the Trust.

6.15pm for 6.30pm start in Haddenham Youth and Community Centre (5 Woodways, Haddenham, HP17 8DS). The talk will be followed with drinks. Signed copies of An Economic History of the English Garden will be available for sale.
