Sculpture in the Garden
This July, the Turn End Charitable Trust welcomes an exciting exhibition of outdoor sculptures. The exhibition is set within the tranquil setting of Turn End gardens. Visitors to the exhibition will see an enticing selection of traditional and contemporary artworks, all for sale, from local, national and international artists.
‘Sculpture in the Garden’ is spearheaded by Lendon Scantlebury. Lendon has curated hugely successful exhibitions including ‘Sculpture in the Vineyard’ at Bothy Vineyard in 2013 and the recent ’Art in Ardington’ village exhibition which attracted over 6000 visitors. Based in Wantage, Lendon has run his own bronze foundry and sculpture casting business for over 30 years, as well as undertaking sculpture restoration. The exhibition at Turn End is co-curated by Lindsay Waring, herself an accomplished sculptor.
Inspired by the secluded gardens at Turn End, Lendon and Lindsay have brought together beautiful and varied sculptures in many different media including stone, glass, wood and steel. From traditional statuary to pieces inspired by plants and animals, the sculptures have been selected to complement any size and style of garden and various budgets. Turn End’s own Artist in Residence, Heather Hunter, will also be opening her own studio throughout the exhibition. Heather specialises in artists books and printing. She uses the garden for inspiration and teaches workshops at Turn End.
Tucked away in the heart of the Buckinghamshire village of Haddenham, Turn End’s garden is an intriguing series of ‘garden rooms’, enveloping the architect’s own post-war Grade 2* listed house. It includes sunken gardens, raised beds, formal box garden, richly planted borders, curving lawn and glades, all framed by ancient walls and mature trees. Exploring the exhibition, set amongst these lush, flower-filled gardens will be a journey of discovery and delight.
Home made cakes and teas will also be available at the exhibition, served by local volunteers in aid of a number of charities.
The exhibition is hosted by the Turn End Charitable Trust. The Trust was established to foster appreciation of links between architecture and garden design. The Trust organises a programme of public events at Turn End, including garden walks, open days, gardening classes and creative workshops.
